You Don’t Have to Lie

Peaceful fall river scene

Everyone around you may be lying, but that doesn’t mean you have to lie.

Liars may seem to have an advantage, but they never really do. People lie to gain some kind of temporary advantage in the world. It may seem to work, but it never does. Eventually the truth catches up to them. Eventually the truth catches up to all of us.

Truth is the fundamental Reality. It is what is. Your lies will be swept away like sand.

Everyone is going to be exposed as a charlatan eventually. You might as well be ahead of the curve and admit what lies you tell on a habitual basis. It’s very liberating. It can feel vulnerable at first, but it’s worth it. Soon you’ll notice there’s a freedom in honesty that’s really enjoyable. It’s the way love grows in us.

The darkness of lying is heavy and painful. It drags you down. It prevents your happiness. Let truth light up your life. Let it be known — which is to say let who you are be known. Being who you are is powerful and liberating.

When we lie, we can’t really be close to anyone. People can’t know us because we are faking. Stop faking and start being real.

Start telling the truth and build friendships with people who care about you, who want to hear what you have to say, who want a relationship that is genuine.

It’s up to you.

Your commitment to the truth is a commitment to truth at all costs and that’s what makes it powerful. You may lose some things in the short term, but in the long term you’ll be better off for it. (You will be better off for it immediately although you may not realize it.)

Truth helps those who help themselves. Help yourself by telling the truth. Start today. Remember that it doesn’t matter what anyone else does. You can’t control them, anyway.

If it bothers you that politicians lie, don’t worry about it. It should be disturbing to hear lies proclaimed by public officials, especially as a way of manipulating those whom they purport to serve. This kind of lying is disturbing because it muddies the waters for people. But as long as you are honest, you’ll be okay. You’ll be in the steady current of Now, a peacefulness of truth, of Reality as it is.

Because you’re a compassionate being, you will care about the suffering that dishonesty causes the public at large, but because you are committed to honesty, you can do something about it. That’s what matters. And because you tell the truth and are honest, you’ll have a better sense of what to say and when to say it.

Love is. Become a lover of what is and tell the truth. Your honesty helps others. Your honesty reveals a Light that is beyond this world, and you can find It as long as you are deeply committed to telling, being, living truth. It’s worth it.
